How Jaw Surgery Could Cure Your Partner’s Sleep Apnea

As the spouse or partner of a snorer, you’ve likely made countless jokes about how their snoring has been keeping you up at night. Or how sleeping next to your snoring partner is like sleeping next to a bear because they snore so loudly. All of the joking aside however, snoring can be cause for concern as that loud rumbling noise your partner is making while they sleep could be a symptom of sleep apnea.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition where, while sleeping, a person’s airway becomes either partially or completely blocked for a period of time. With the airway restricted, a person with sleep apnea will tend to gasp for air or begin to snore loudly.

As a person’s body enters deep sleep, the muscles of the upper-airway relax which also relaxes the soft palate and tongue. This can block a person’s airway and restricts their intake of oxygen. Sleep apnea is characterised by cycles of abnormal breathing which starves the body of oxygen.

As the body receives less oxygen, carbon dioxide builds up in the body and blood. The lack of oxygen then signals the body to wake, which can happen numerous times an hour. This constant disturbance to sleep is why people who experience sleep apnea feel sluggish and sleepy as they go about their day.

Sleep apnea is associated with chronic fatigue as well as a diminished quality of life. In addition, sleep apnea has been shown to increase the odds of developing heart disease and diabetes. It also makes a person more susceptible to depression and obesity.

Treating Sleep Apnea With Jaw Surgery

Sleep apnea is caused by the restriction of a person’s airway. If a person has developed a small or incorrectly proportioned jaw, their airway is already partially restricted. Upon entering deep sleep, the problem is compounded by the collapse of their tongue and soft palate as there is inadequate space for the tongue to lay “normally” in the floor of the mouth..

To correct the issue of an underdeveloped jaw, we have developed IMDO™, a groundbreaking surgery which rapidly grows your jaw forward to help open a person’s airway and alleviate sleep apnea. IMDO™ differs from traditional surgical approaches to sleep apnea in that the results are permanent, and there is a considerably shorter healing and recovery period.
